We woke up at around 10 a.m. in Sam’s apartment (our latest wake up of the trip so far) and headed over to Josh’s place. We assembled a six person bicycle gang (Sam, Josh, Jacob, Jane and us) and headed to Sharky’s for brunch. Excellent breakfast food, free mimosas and a view of the beach . . . a perfect combination. We worked off the breakfast calories by going for a bike ride on the boardwalk on the beach, with a brief stop at the elementary school playground . . . on the beach. How great would it be to have you school playground be on the beach? Lucky kids.
Back at Josh’s house, we said our goodbyes then headed back to Sam’s apartment to pack up our stuff and get back on the road. We took the Pacific Coast Highway (or as the locals call it, the PCH) down to Encinitas to visit Katie’s friends Heather and Moses (the couple getting married at the end of our road trip near Washington D.C.
When we arrived in Encinitas, Heather and Moses were already at the beach, so we grabbed the surfboard they left for us at their place and then headed down to the beach to meet them. Dermot got to experience the Pacific Ocean for the first time ever, with a surfboard in tow. The waves were good unlike Dermot’s surfing abilities. Trying to surf for the first time ever on a short board, in five to six foot sweels in the Pacific Ocean is not the best idea ever. It was a lot of fun, though. Moses showed Dermot what it looks like to actually surf and then we all headed back to the beach to catch some rays
Dermot decided that the blinding white light reflecting off his skin was unfair to fellow beach goers, so he convinced everyone to head back up to Heather and Moses’ apartment. There we got ready to go out to dinner. Katie’s friend Molly stopped by and then we all headed out to dinner together. Heather’s brother Brent and friend met us at a JamRoc, a tasty Caribbean restaurant. We all enjoyed some Red Stripe and Caribbean food. We headed back to Molly’s place at around 11. Dermot found out that Torrey Pines Golf Course was 5 minutes from Molly’s place, so his plans for the next morning were set. The alarm clock was set for 5:45 a.m. and off to sleep we went.
