We left with April in the morning, thanked her for her family’s hospitality and hit the road to get Dermot to the Tennison Park Municipal Golf Course in Dallas, TX. Dermot was paired up with two locals, originally from Long Island. While the course had a good layout, it was not in the greatest shape. Dermot shot 90, as he played well on the front nine, but the Texas heat/humidity got to him on the back nine.
Katie toured around Dallas, visiting the local Starbucks to do website updating and of course to partake in the first taste of fall– pumpkin spice latte. Unfortunately, Katie’s co-workers from Google Dallas were busy working (what is this?! Haha) and weren’t able to meet up. They gave Katie recommendations of must sees in Dallas, and off she went to see the Texas School Book Depository and the grassy knoll where JFK was shot. While it was an interesting history lesson, Katie got a creepy feeling being on the 6th floor where Oswald so called fired the shot. It was interesting to learn more about the multiple conspiracy theories, as well as learn about JFK’s legacy.
After Katie’s history lesson, she picked up Dermot and hit the road for Houston. We grabbed a quite bite on the road at Bubba’s BBQ—where we got the pulled pork platters, baked beans, dry cornbread and mashers and gravy. We passed on the ‘pick your own raw meat’ fridge…. Where you pick it and they grill it. God bless Texas.
We arrived to Christine and Hanson’s adorable 120 year old house in downtown Houston just after 7pm. We caught up on our adventures, met their 5 week old English springer spaniel, Ruby, and got a tour of their new home! They let us know that Hurricane Humbero was just off the coast of S. Texas, and Christine’s school was postponed until 12pm tomorrow! We followed the hurricane to see that it was re-classified as a ‘tropical storm’ and was missing all of the general areas where we would be traveling… phew!
We headed out into town for authentic Tex-Mex at Escalante’s. The food was incredible, as was the service and our free dessert (what was it, not sure…but it was free!) After heading back to their home, we stayed up way past our bedtime watching TV and learning songs about Wednesday business socks (Flight of the Concords)!
