While the rest of the world was busy at work, Katie and I decided to get up and visit Vulcan park. Claude is the treasurer of the board of directors for the park and he suggested we make the visit. Dermot found out that Vulcan is the god of forge, so the metallurgist in him was excited for the visit. Our quiet visit Vulcan park was cut short by a field trip of 100 1st graders. We decided to get out of their way and let them enjoy Vulcan park and all the noise they were creating in it. We headed over to Homewood to check out the shops. We stopped at a bakery for a snack and then did some window shopping. Dermot’s expanding waistline motivated him to purchase a pair of running shoes in an effort to impede its growth. To Dermot’s dismay, there were no immediate results after the credit card was swiped and the shoes were his.
After shopping we headed back to the Estes residence to meet up with Eleanor after her tennis match. We headed out for lunch at Bottega. We learned that Birmingham is a relatively small town as Eleanor basically knew everyone at the restaurant.
After lunch, Dermot decided to go play golf and let Katie and Eleanor do some catching up while touring around Birmingham, visiting Eleanor’s mom and going to their daughter Dot’s volleyball game. On the golf course, Dermot had one of his best rounds in quite sometime. The course was short (6000 yards from the back tees), but narrow and Dermot shot a 78. Best score of the year (although it was probably the easiest course he played all year).
After golfing and volleyball spectating, Dermot and Katie met back up at Claude and Eleanor’s place. From there Katie, Eleanor and Dermot headed out to a local Italian place for dinner. Claude met us at the restaurant after a long day of work. Today was the official end of the corporate tax season, so he was happy to sit back and relax. We enjoyed another night of excellent food and conversation and then headed back home to call it a night. Dermot was very excited to get to watch the end of the Yankees/Red Sox series, which the red hot Yankees won. (Hey Boston, do you hear those footsteps yet?) A good end to a great day.
