We rewarded ourselves from spending the day in Starbucks yesterday, with getting to visit the newly opened (2003) Smithsonian Air & Space museum out in Dulles International Airport.
We got to see airplanes from all of the world wars, including the world’s fastest airplane, the Blackbird. It was a huge plane—and incredibly impressive to be able to fly around the world undetected. Dermot was excited to see working models of the GE and Rolls Royce engines that contained turbine blades made at this old job at Howmet.
The other highlight was getting to see the Enterprise space ship! It was so incredibly massive, which was even more impressive to learn that it arrived on the back of a Boeing 767- incredible! We also got to see the real camper (a converted Airstream trailer) that the astronauts had to be detained in 1969…. after walking on the moon to avoid until they were cleaned of all ‘space germs’ (this was the technical term…)
After our adventures at Dulles, we headed to Baltimore to see Tamie’s family (Katie’s sister). Gamin led us astray for lunch… to someone’s actual house! I think our GPS is officially sick of us…. so we went to Oakville Restaurant in Bethesda instead.
Tamie’s new house is in a great part of town, but Katie thinks it’s too dangerously close to Dunkin Donuts… We got the tour of the new digs and headed out to the grocery to make chicken parmigiana, cornbread salad (thanks Sanjy!) and strawberry shortcake. We were greeted by Tamie’s husband Toyja for dessert, as he was returning from Texas from a work trip. We all caught up on the last three episodes of curb your enthusiasm which we have not been able to watch while on our trip.
