Before the alarm even sounded Dermot was out of bed and in his car on the way to the Torrey Pines golf course. Arriving at 5:50 a.m. he was about 20th in line for a tee time. He was part of the 4th foursome to tee off on the South Course (Home of the 2008 U.S. Open). Dermot was paired up with three lads from County Sligo in Ireland (the county next to his mother’s birthplace). Niall, Brendan (a former county Irish Football player), Patrick and Dermot played from the blue tees and had a wonderful round. (Dermot shot a 91 if anyone cares).
While Dermot was on the links, Katie and Molly went for a jog in the morning (okay, Katie rode a bike…but on the beach) at 6 a.m. Katie then met Heather and Moses for breakfast and Molly went to class. Katie and Molly met up afterward to get pedicures and then headed over to Torrey Pines to pick up Dermot.
Dermot was ready for his second battle with the Pacific Ocean. This time he was better equipped with a foam long board courtesy of Molly’s cousin Molly. The waves were very intense in Del Mar, but Dermot managed to get up on the board a couple of time and almost look like he knew what he was doing. The rest of the afternoon we hung out on the beach with the Mollys (who live in the same apartment complex). Katie, Molly, and Dermot did some swimming in the Pacific until Molly had to go to class in the afternoon. Once again we packed up all our stuff, had to say goodbye to another friend and get back on the road.
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do sushi dinner with Kira and Aaron in LA, so we took a leisurely drive up the PCH to Laguna Beach. It looked just like it does on TV. We picked up dinner at Wahoo Taco and ate dinner on the beach watching a beautiful sunset… right across from Laguna Surf Shop (where Steven worked…duh) After dinner we going to stop a Laguna Beach Brewing Company to try one of their beers, but we find out it went out of business. We settled for a candy store next door instead.
With full stomachs, we got back on the road towards Los Angeles. Dermot got in touch with a bunch of his fraternity brothers that lived in the area and made plans to go out for some drinks. We arrived at Phil’s (a.k.a Steve “Spill”berg) place sometime around 9 p.m. and then went out to the local Irish Pub called Hennessey’s to meet up with Ron, Nonny and Moochie. As Katie put it, we were quite an eclectic group. No one changed too much since college…. It was great to see old friends and relive the college years (tequila shots and all). To all our amusement, Nonny was being “stalked” by a 40 year old dude who seemed to like his fashion and rollerblading accolades. We did manage to get him out of the predicament, though. I think Nonny’s choice to snort salt, take a shot of tequila and then squeeze lime juice in his eye helped to scare off his new friend. Good times. . . .
Katie drove back up to Hollywood where we stayed the night with Kira and Aaron in their awesome LA bungalow. Unfortunately, their dogs greeted our 2 a.m. arrival and managed to wake up Aaron and Kira, but we went straight to bed as did the dogs . . . . . eventually.
